January 2010                                                                Volume I, Issue 5

As we begin the second semester, we will focus more and more on the state testing that will take place in April.  Our instruction is driven by the state Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) objectives as outlined for us by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.  Our goal is to improve each day – both staff and students.  If we do that, we will accomplish our goals both academically and socially.  Our students have improved in both aspects, but we will continue to raise our expectations.  We will also prepare them for success – whether that is preparing them with the best instruction or encouraging the behaviors that will ensure that they are prepared socially for tomorrow’s challenges in the world.

Life Principles and Quotes of the Week

This year, as part of our implementation of Great Expectations, everyone on our campus will be aware and focus on the life principle and quote of the week.  January’s life principles and quotes of the week are...

January 4Accountability – the ability to answer to one’s own actions

“The choices we make dictate the lives we lead.”                                                                -William Shakespeare

January 11Determination – the quality of being resolute, unwavering

“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.”                                                                                                                                                                 -Abraham Lincoln

January 19Teamwork – work done by a group to accomplish a task

“I believe the welfare of each is bound up in the welfare of all.”                                       -Helen Keller

January 25Appreciation – to recognize with gratitude

“Forget injuries; never forget kindnesses.”                                                                          -Confucius

HIV/AIDS Education, PSI, Health Fair Parent Meeting…

We will have a parent meeting in the FMS Library at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, for any FMS parent who has questions, concerns or just wants to hear more about our approach to the state mandated sex education for schools.  We are required to educate our sixth grade students about HIV/AIDS.  Our seventh grade students attend a PSI (Postponing Sexual Involvement) Seminar at the Great Plains Technology Center (GPTC).  Our eighth grade students attend the county Health Fair also at the GPTC.  Nancy and I will be joined by the instructors from our campus as well as representatives from the Health Department.

Sixth Grade Passport to Careers…

Sixth grade students will attend the Passport to Careers workshop at the Great Plains Technology Center on Wednesday morning, January 27.  At this hands-on workshop, students will be exposed to several different occupations.  Our students will have a thought provoking, fun time at this workshop.

Campus Improvements…

The new blinds have been installed and look great!  We expect delivery on the 52 student desks this week.  The students are looking forward to the new desks.  By making the goal for the fundraiser and stating what we would do with the money, our students are seeing that hard work pays off.

We will continue to seek areas that we can improve on site to help our students be more and more proud of their school.

Cheer Night…

Following through with our challenge to the students, Coach Roady and I will cheer at the FMS Junior High Boys Basketball game here on Thursday, January 28.  That game is vs. Hobart.  We are thankful and excited to announce that Athletic Director Mike Parsons will allow us to keep the gate receipts from that night for our middle school activities account.  Look for the new cheerleaders to appear during the second quarter through halftime of the last game.

After-School Tutoring…

Once again, teachers are always available for students to tutor after school each day from 3:00-3:30 p.m.  Teachers are willing to help students during this time, and later if the need arises.  Please encourage your child to attend tutoring if he or she is having trouble with any class.  It is important to get the new semester started off on the right foot.

Staff Development…

We will be out of school for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 18.  Teachers will report to campus on that day for staff development.  We will resume school on Tuesday, January 19.

The Frederick Middle School Creed…

I am an honest, disciplined, intelligent Frederick Bomber.

I will be well-prepared for the challenges of each day.

I will work diligently to surpass my goals and reach my full potential.

I will learn from my mistakes and set a positive example for my peers.

I will Value others as unique individuals and treat them with respect because…
